Case Study: Bright Star Memorial — Odessa, Texas
In the wake of the tragic mass shooting in Odessa on August 31, 2019, Cultural Compass Consulting principal Randy Ham led a deeply collaborative effort to honor the lives lost and support community healing through public art. Working closely with the City of Odessa, the Odessa Chamber of Commerce, and the University of Texas of the Permian Basin, Randy facilitated a visionary initiative to commission a memorial that would both honor the victims and provide a contemplative, reflective space for families, survivors, and the broader community.
The process began with an open call that attracted more than 100 proposals from artists across the country. Guided by clearly defined selection criteria and rooted in community values, a diverse review panel selected acclaimed sculptor Jim Sanborn, whose work resonates through its thoughtful integration of meaning, place, and material. Through stakeholder workshops, site planning sessions, and coordinated engagement with local leaders and families, the project advanced with shared purpose and sensitivity.
The Bright Star Memorial and its accompanying plaza were unveiled at the five-year observance of the tragedy, offering a space of solace, remembrance, and hope. What emerged is more than a memorial—it is a testament to community resilience and an enduring symbol of collective healing.
